Writing Content
Character Limits
Each platform has different character limits. Postle shows you a live counter for each selected platform and warns you if you exceed the limit.
| Platform | Character Limit | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| X | 280 | Most restrictive - write concisely |
| 500 | Short descriptions work best | |
| 2,200 | Caption limit for posts and reels | |
| TikTok | 2,200 | Caption limit for videos |
| 3,000 | Good for longer professional content | |
| YouTube | 5,000 | Description limit for videos |
| 63,206 | Practically unlimited |
Character Counter Visual States
The character counter changes color to help you:
- Gray (0-80%): Safe zone - plenty of room
- Amber (80-100%): Warning - approaching limit
- Red (over 100%): Error - content too long for this platform
Hashtags and Mentions
You can include hashtags (#) and mentions (@) directly in your content:
- Hashtags: Use #hashtag anywhere in your text. They help categorize content and improve discoverability.
- Mentions: Use @username to tag other users or brands. Platform-specific: Instagram and Facebook support mentions, Twitter auto-links them.
- Character counting: Hashtags and mentions count toward your character limit on all platforms.
Emojis and Special Characters
All platforms support emojis and most special characters:
- Use emojis to add personality and visual interest
- Some emojis count as 2 characters on Twitter - the counter adjusts automatically
- Line breaks are preserved on all platforms
- Bullet points (•) and other symbols work on all platforms

- Recommended: MP4 with H.264 codec for best compatibility
| Platform | Recommended Aspect Ratio | Max Duration | Max Size |

| 9:16 (vertical) or 1:1 (square) | 90 seconds (Reels) | 500MB | |
| TikTok | 9:16 (vertical) | 10 minutes | 500MB |
| YouTube | 9:16 (Shorts) or 16:9 (regular) | 60 seconds (Shorts) | 500MB |
| 16:9 or 1:1 | 4 hours | 500MB | |

Image Optimization Tips
- Compress before uploading: Use tools like TinyPNG or Squoosh to reduce file size without losing quality
- Use high-quality images: Low-resolution images look blurry on high-DPI screens
- Match platform ratios: Square (1:1) works everywhere, portrait (4:5) is best for Instagram feed
- Add text overlays sparingly: Make sure text is readable on mobile

Cross-Posting Considerations
When posting to multiple platforms simultaneously:
- Character limits: Write for the most restrictive platform (Twitter at 280 characters)
- Video formats: Vertical (9:16) works best for TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts
- Hashtags: Different platforms have different hashtag cultures. 1-3 hashtags work universally.
- Image dimensions: Square (1:1) or portrait (4:5) work well everywhere
